Snapshots From Home: Making Secret Tunnel Rooms
...from lockdown delivery boxes!
Louie, 4 years old and Evie, 3 years old, from Melbourne, Australia along with mum Esther, collected cardboard boxes from lockdown deliveries and used other recycling like cereal and tea boxes to build a cubby with secret tunnel rooms and new worlds!
Esther explained that:
"Most of our building happens spontaneously without much planning. The kids love cubby houses so our creations often turn into play spaces (little homes, tee-pees, rockets, shantytowns etc). This particular construction used the largest cardboard boxes first which were opened up to create the walls. Then we just kept building it up and around until it felt solid. Adding little alcoves, windows and rooms is always fun. The kids love to have parts they can open and close or interact with, so we often add a mailbox, windows with shutters, doors, flaps, little storage boxes and knobs etc.
The kids give lots of input as to how the construction should develop. They’re still quite young so the bulk of the building is assisted by others but they have loads of fun adding elements and playing in the new world. Adding a mailbox is essential for most of our builds and a chimney or telescope often delivers surprise gifts."
During lockdown Louis, Evie and Esther made a stop motion video and sent it to their preschool teachers to share the process of their making at home.
