Snapshots from Home: Keeping Busy on a Rainy Afternoon With Dad
During an afternoon on holidays on the Mornington Peninsula, Australia. Toby, 4 years old, and his Dad were prompted by a rainy day by the bay. The burst of creativity led to a basic Makedo cardboard construction using around 20 scrus to build a vehicle and a headpiece. They also used a fallen tree branch as the prop to make the paddle.
Toby’s Dad explained that they were inspired by the beach and water:
“It’s a sailing contraption of some kind made equally for the sandy shallows and the high seas, depending on one’s mood. To get started we simply gathered some boxes we had lying around and grabbed our Makedo tools. As we couldn’t swim / row on the real bay that day, Toby decided it’d be fun to recreate that experience on the verandah instead. So while the ground beneath him was still, his imagination was alive with the sights, smells and thought of the water. So fun!”
Highlights for Toby were the construction with Dad and then the imaginative play that ensued and lasted the whole day, and continued in animated bursts for the duration of the holiday.
