Building a Cardboard Dome Reading Space with Makedo100
Makedo is a system of tools for cardboard construction to make it easy for students to use cardboard to create anything they imagine … even a new room! Grade 8 students from St Marguerite d’Youville Catholic School, Ontario, constructed a cardboard dome reading space in their school library. Fitted out with a sofa, chairs and beanbags, they tweeted - It’s a great place for students and staff to enjoy reading, working and relaxing.
This project shows how Makedo construction can happen in any learning environment; classrooms, maker spaces, libraries, after-hours and holiday programs, summer camps, scouting groups and anywhere else that there are learners! (see the Makedo Educator’s Guide, coming soon).
The dome construction not only provided students with a new space to kick back; they used a number of skills including engineering, maths, design and construction to create their own adaptation of the very popular Makedo geodesic dome.
Such Makedo experiences allow students opportunities to measure and calculate proportions for panel sizes, as well as fold, scru, connect and make large scale structures.
