The Growth Mindset and Makedo Philosophy
0In the context of a growing understanding of ‘brain plasticity’, that is, the brain’s ability to change and grow, the ‘Growth Mindset’ is HUGE in education at the moment. This phenomenon is based on the belief that abilities, skills and learning can be developed and that everyone can change and grow through application and experience.
The ‘Growth Mindset’ (as opposed to a ‘fixed mindset’) promotes a set of traits that encourages learners to embrace challenges and develop a love for learning. We at Makedo believe just this. (see the Makedo Educator’s Guide - coming soon). Don’t give up!
So what does the ‘Growth Mindset’ mean for young designers and makers?
When using Makedo, and in everyday life, we encourage educators to support students to …
- View challenges as opportunities for learning.
- Find new ways of learning and ways of learning that suits them.
- Make mistakes and enjoy the process.
- Remember that learning takes time and just because students haven’t got something YET doesn’t mean they won’t master it.
- Ask ‘what can you try next?’ Encourage students to ask questions and learn to use reflection and constructive feedback.
- Feel positive about efforts, persistence and determination!
Makedo is a Learning Tool for open-ended, hands on experiences. But most importantly, it creates an environment for students to have fun using their brain and motivates the attitudes towards learning promoted in the ’Growth Mindset’.
