Snapshots From Home: Hogwarts Castle
Olivia (8 years old) and her dad, Andrew, used Makedo tools and recycled cardboard to construct Hogwarts castle from the Harry Potter stories. Olivia and Andrew have read all of the Harry Potter books together.
The making happened in Melbourne, Australia, over several sessions and days. Olivia and Andrew worked together starting with design and engineering concepts to make a model of Hogwarts. The castle doubled as a small, snug cubby for Olivia. She explained:
"It's Hogwarts Castle. It doesn't look exactly like it because it's small. It's a small version of one section of Hogwarts. It has a balcony, one turret and opening doors to the balcony.
It was fun to work with Dad; I always do it with Dad. We came up with the idea together. He helped me with the drawing so I knew what it would look like. We took it in turns doing everything - screwing, sawing, cutting. Daddy showed me all these things to make the castle steady and how to make the cone shape. He called it structural engineering. It's literally architecture and building.
I like that you get to recycle cardboard because we have loads of old cardboard from things that we ordered online and it's good for the environment. I use it [the castle] because it's cosy and warm, I like small spaces. I like reading in there. Now we have an idea for a crazy rocket!"
